Formula of Concord
How we understand the basics of the faith marks how can we try to explain them to others – friends, family, coworkers. Root your understanding through a study of the Formula of Concord and its intersection with Scripture. The Formula is the last document to have been concluded in the Lutheran confessions are the basic statements of the Lutheran faith. That may sound a bit heavy, but the discussion should be lively as we answer questions such as: do humans have free will? Does God’s law still apply if Christ died to us from the law? How could Christ be both divine and human?

Book of Deuteronomy
A look at the Old Testament book of Deuteronomy. In this text, Moses reviews God's Law with His people just before they enter the promised land. Though this may not sound incredibly exciting or practical, I think you’ll be surprised how applicable and valuable the text is for our life of faith in Christ.
Readings and discussion questions for each session are in the files below. Scripture references may also be accessed online. Please read the corresponding chapters of Deuteronomy before each Sunday session, it will help with discussion. The class period will certainly not be long enough for us to work verse-by-verse through all 34 chapters of Deuteronomy!

Book of James
|
|
Martin Luther had conflicting thoughts about the Book of James, at one time celebrating its instruction; at another famously calling it “the epistle of straw”. So how do we approach the writings of James in light of the message of the Gospel? Join us as Pastor Morris leads an exploration of this five chapter book, including the questions it raises concerning the intersection of works and faith.

What is the simplest way to understand the Christian faith?
How can we believe something taught 500 years ago by one man named Martin Luther? Do different understandings of the faith mean other people aren't saved? These questions & more will be explored in a two-month study of Luther's Small & Large Catechisms. Recommended for anyone who did not grow up Lutheran, this class is also a refresher & growth opportunity for those who learned the catechism decades ago. (Fall 2022) |
